As of today one of Sega’s most successful mobile games in Japan, Chain Chronicle, has been made available for the US on iOS and Android. Gumi seems to be handling everything regarding the English version of the game, and although it’s still a Sega game, they don’t seem to be involved with (or promoting) the launch of the game. I gave the game a try, and so far the experience has been rather positive. I haven’t been bugged with popups for in-app purchases (that are sadly very prominent in other Sega mobile games) yet, although I’ve only completed the tutorial at this point.
The gameplay is simple enough. You have four characters in your team at your disposal (you can select which characters you bring on your team outside of battle), and the goal is to stop the enemy from reaching the zone behind you. Characters are moved by selecting them and swiping them to the location you want to move them. Special attacks are at your disposal as well to deal with the stronger enemies and bosses. There’s certainly a lot that I don’t know yet, but the basics are easy to learn.
Story-wise, it’s too early to tell just how elaborate the story is, but it’s nice to see that there is a story at all. The graphics are very basic, but the artwork tends to be of a rather high quality (the quality does vary because a lot of different artists provided artwork for the game). Personally I haven’t been a fan of any of Sega’s more recent mobile games due to the way the in-app purchases constantly disturb the gameplay. So far, Chain Chronicle seems to handle it better.
