At the end of E3 2016, Atlus U.S.A. still had surprise announcement in store. They’ll be publishing Caligula, an RPG for the PlayStation Vita which is being developed by Aquria, in both the Americas and the EU. Previously, Atlus had already worked together with FuRyu to release The Legend of Legacy in the Americas.
The fact that Atlus is also publishing Caligula in the EU seems a bit surprising, given that Atlus used to have their own titles published by NIS America in Europe (a partnership that ended some time ago). But the fact that they’ll be releasing Caligula as a digital-only title on the PlayStation Network will probably have something to do with that. The localized version of the game will also use the original Japanese audio. Here’s the short press release from Atlus U.S.A.:
ATLUS and FuRyu are partnering once again to localize and release Caligula as a digital download title for the PlayStation®Vita in the Americas AND Europe next spring. We’ll have more details later, but we couldn’t resist packing this surprise to close out E3!
Caligula‘s story was written by Tadashi Satomi, who also wrote the scenarios of Persona and Persona 2. Caligula features a virtual world called Mobius, and everyone in it is a high school student and endlessly repeats their three year high school life. This world was created by a vocal software called μ, who created Mobius to save people from the problems in the real world. In Mobius, most people aren’t aware that they’re not in the real world. The protagonist of the game do discover the truth, however, and end up working together to find a way to escape Mobius and return to the real world.
As stated above, Atlus will reveal more details later on. Caligula will be released on June 23 in Japan. Some screenshots, courtesy of Atlus U.S.A., are included below.
