Atlus has released plenty of new Persona 5 details and footage from the game following their recent “Take The Treasure” live stream. Most notably, Atlus has uploaded a video featuring the first 18 minutes of the game. This video has already been translated with English subititles, courtesy of dominationkid w. Below you can find our writeup on the recent videos.
Opening Animation
The animated cutscenes for the game are handled by Production IG, and the stylish opening animation is no exception. This is the updated version of the opening, this time with vocals performed by Lyn, and the inclusion of a short sequence showing Makoto, Futaba and Haru (the three girls that were announced after the initial version of the opening was revealed). The character Goro, on the other hand, wasn’t included.
First 18 minutes of the game, with English fan subtitles
As stated earlier, Atlus posted the first 18 minutes of the game on Youtube, and a fan named dominationkid w. has added English subtitles to the video. Evidently, this means spoilers! If you want to avoid those, please skip this section. The game starts by dropping you right into the action, as you control the game’s protagonist attempting to escape from the police. We get to see how the platforming aspect of the game works, and the controls are admittedly not exactly deep. The players just press the same “Action” button over and over between every platform to traverse the area.
Soon after, the player encounters the first opponent in the game’s turn-based battle system. In the video, the character’s Persona is used to attack the enemy, disposing it rather quickly and moving onward. While the player receives instructions from his friends in order to escape, things don’t go as planned and the protagonist is ultimately captured by the police. Interestingly, as he’s taken into custody the protagonist is told that (one of) his friends sold him out, much to his own surprise.
In the interrogation scene that follows, we get to see how the difficulty selection is neatly integrated into the game’s story as part of the interrogation scene. The same holds true for the name entry: the protagonist is asked to sign a document, at which point the game asks you to enter the name of your choice for the main character.
As the interrogation progresses, we get to hear the familiar sound related to the Velvet Room, a place between time and space, where a voice tells the protagonist that there’s still a way to change this outcome. The game then warps back to the start of the adventure, which also marks the “real” start of the game (and soon after the end of the video).
Morgana Car and Free Quest
This gameplay video shows off Morgana’s surprising ability to transform into an actual car. Incidentally, we’ve seen this car before in earlier videos, before we know this was actually Morgana. The video also shows the game’s “Mementos”, where you enter randomly generated dungeons. Here you can use Morgana (as a car) to travel around and complete various quests. The latter part of the video shows a cutscene of the group traversing a desert in the Morgana Car, most likely before they enter the pyramid shown in other gameplay videos.
Protagonist Video
This is the first of several commercials for the game, presenting the main characters. The first one features the game’s protagonist.
Cooperation Characters
More cooperation characters have been revealed. Since Gematsu did all the work translating the descriptions for these characters from the official website of the game, it’s only fair that I refer you to their article on the videos for more information on these characters. Two of the videos (Ichiko Oya and Yuki Mishima) have been translated by dominationkid as well.
Hifumi Togo
Toranosuke Yoshida
Sadayo Kawakami
Chihaya Mifune
Yuki Mishima
Shinya Oda
Ichiko Oya
Persona 5 the Animation: The Day Breakers Anime
The upcoming anime has also received a preview, which is only available for viewing in Japan on Youtube. However, Gematsu has provided a link to an MP4 version of the video here.
