The latest Japanese videogame sales results from Media Create have been released, and they paint a rather bleak picture for the first week of sales for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X HD. The game entered the charts at number 8, with a total of 12.915 copies sold. While it was to be expected that the PS4 version wouldn’t do better than the PS Vita version, these sales are still worse than expected. For reference, the PS Vita version sold 69,438 copies in its first week, which in itself was already a low number for a series once capable of selling over 200,000 copies in its first week.
There are likely several factors that contributed to the poor performance of Project DIVA X HD. The presence of the PS Vita version which has been on the market for a while now, as well as the release of Project DIVA Future Tone on PS4, no doubt had an influence. Hopefully, this won’t cause problems for future games in the franchise. In that regard, the sales for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X in the West may be more important than ever.
As for The King of Fighters XIV, it entered the chart at number 4 with a modest 20.655 copies sold. All in all this seems about as much as one would have expected from the game, as recent games in the franchise sold less copies. It’s probably worth noting that this was a poor week in terms of video games sales altogether in Japan, with the top newcomer being No Man’s Sky at 22,000 copies sold. Hopefully Persona 5 can turn things around.
