Shenmue 3 Is Now the Most Funded Video Game on Kickstarter Ever

With only a few hours left until the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter ends, it has now beaten the previous record of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to become the most funded video game on Kickstarter ever. At the moment the total funding amount has exceeded $5,800,000. With around 6 hours to go, it may yet have a chance of reaching the $6 million target. The Kickstarter has now has also added a new $39 reward, which aside from the digital version of the game also included exclusive wallpapers, and a mention of your name on the official website. Given the fact that Yu Suzuki would have liked to reach $10 million, there’s probably a good chance that they’ll continue funding through PayPal after the Kickstarter ends, although as of yet this hasn’t been confirmed by Ys Net.

A Twitch stream will take place in the final hours of the Kickstarter campaign, which you can watch here. Let’s hope Awesome Japan will deliver a more professional presentation this time around, so that the Kickstarter can end on a high note!

Sega Announces TV Anime for Phantasy Star Online 2

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Phantasy Star Online franchise, Sega has announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will get an anime adaption named Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation. Little is known about the project, other than that it will have an original storyline which takes place on Earth in the near future. You can find the official website for the project here. The anime is scheduled to be released in 2016.

Of course, the announcement of the anime only reminds us of the fact that Phantasy Star Online 2 still hasn’t been released in the West. Many have given up on seeing the game localized, although Sega still hasn’t officially canceled the title. As unlikely as it may seem, we still hope to see a surprise announcement for the game.

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi Wants to Win Back the Fans’ Trust

UPDATE: the interview was done with Haruki Satomi and not his father, Hajime Satomi, as the article initially stated. We edited the article to correct this.

Haruki Satomi, the founder of Sammy Corporation and also the current CEO of Sega, recently had an interview with Famitsu in which he talked about the past and future of Sega. Siliconera has posted a translation of the interview, revealing some interesting information. When asked about the state of the current console market, he recognized that the PlayStation 4, while not doing all that well in Japan, is selling very well in the rest of the world. He went on to note that the sales of Yakuza Zero in China have exceeded their expectations.

“As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus.”

In regards to the West, Satomi says they learned a lot from Atlus. In particular, he mentioned that “if we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games.”. Obviously, that’s something we believe as well, so it’s good to hear Satomi himself recognize that they can learn from the way Atlus manages to sell niche Japanese games in the West.

“If we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.”

When asked about America and Europe, Satomi had the following to say: “Especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.”. He goes on to note that Sega will focus more on quality from now on, and because of that he won’t promise that they will be able to announce a new console game soon, although he does believe they’ll have something to announce at the Tokyo Game Show. When Famitsu asks what they can look forward to from Sega in the future, Satomi states that back in the ’90s, Sega was known for its brand, but has since lost the trust from its fans and has mostly been relying on its past reputation. In the future, he wants to win back the consumers’ trust, and wants Sega to become a brand again.

It’s certainly interesting to see Haruki Satomi himself make these comments, as for the most part they do echo what many fans have been saying over the past years: Sega lost what made it such a strong brand back in the console days by repeatedly releasing games that don’t live up to the quality we expect from them. It’s also really encouraging to see that Satomi thinks that Japanese games do have an audience in the West. So, Mr. Satomi, about Phantasy Star Online 2…

Shenmue 3 Physical PS4 Copy Confirmed, Awesome Japan Issues Apology

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page received a new update today, announcing a new PS4 physical copy reward. Those who pledge $60 or more will have the option to choose between a digital or physical copy of the game for either the PC or PS4. Before, only the PC version had an option for a physical copy. This has been one of the top requests from fans, so it’s good to see the option is finally there. Other new rewards have been added as well, though the high cost will probably put them out of reach for the majority of people.

In the same update Awesome Japan, the company managing the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter, has also posted an apology for the recent Twitch stream with Yu Suzuki. The Twitch stream in question suffered from bad audio and video quality, and the presentation itself left a lot to be desired. The company had this to say:

We offer our sincerest apologies for last week’s Twitch broadcast and any trouble it may have caused. This apology comes late, and we accept full responsibility. We promise we will do everything we can to help bring Shenmue back. We ask for your forgiveness and the opportunity to make amends. – from all of us at Awesome Japan

Pledges for the Shenmue Kickstarter had been going relatively slow over the past week, but the new rewards have given it a considerable boost, pushing the total pledge amount over $4,000,000. It’s also probably not a coincidence that this update went live just when the Shenmue fans had organized their recent Tweetathon on the 3rd of the month. In fact, Awesome Japan had called on its backers to join the Tweetathon. Additionally, the fans had also launched a new initiative to boost pledges by asking people to add $30 more to their initial pledge today.

NIS America Will Release Persona 4 Dancing All Night in Europe This Fall

NIS America has confirmed that it will be releasing Persona 4: Dancing All Night for the PlayStation Vita in Europe this Fall. Aside from a regular physical and digital version of the game, they’ll also be releasing the “Disco Fever” EU Edition. While this edition appears to be similar to its US counterpart, not all of the items in the US version are listed in the press release from NIS America. The Teddie keychain is also listed, despite being initially noted as a “North America” exclusive. However, the DLC isn’t listed at the moment. Let’s hope we won’t see a repeat of what happened with Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, where free preorder DLC for the US and Japan versions weren’t free for the EU.

“Big in Japan” EU PlayStation Store Sales Include Plenty of Sega and Atlus Games!

EU gamers felt left out when Sony had a “Golden Week” sale on the US PlayStation Store earlier this year, but Sony has now announced a similar sales initiative named “Big in Japan” for the EU PlayStation Store,  which sees a plethora of Japanese games sold at a discounted price for the PS3, PS Vita and PSP. We made a list of all the Atlus and Sega games featured in the sales, together with their new price. Not listed below but perhaps worth noting is that many of the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, a franchise which will receive a crossover game with the SeHa Girls, have been discounted as well. The sales ends on July 7th.

At the moment, the game has already reached the $2.5 million stretch goal as well. With this, it seems the dream of Shenmue fans around the world will finally become a reality.
