Our Thoughts on Puyo Puyo Quest Being Reskinned as Cranky Food Friends

Puyo Puyo Quest is a fairly successful mobile game in Japan. For the West, the game is being reskinned and launched as “Cranky Food Friends,” with a soft launch that started in Canada and certain European countries. If there is any doubt, compare the featured image with the image below.

Even if Cranky Food Friends was simply inspired by the concept of Puyo Puyo Quest and didn’t involve the replacing of assets, it would beg the question of why Puyo Puyo Quest itself wasn’t released outside of Japan while Cranky Food Friends is going to see such a release. SEGAbits’ Sonic and SEGA Fan Jam Update: Panelists, Date, Featured Games & More

More news on the 2015’s Sonic and SEGA Fan Jam have just come out! The event will take place on November 14 at The Guild Hall Arena in Savannah, Georgia. Tickets are $15 for adults 21 years and older, $10 for those 13-20 years of age, and $5 for the yung Sega fans.

A tentative list of featured games and events have been put up. Shenmue I and Shenmue II will be available to play, fitting with the big news of Shenmue III‘s announcement. Setups for casual play of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax will also be available. By the time Fan Jam is held, the game will have already come out in North America, so perhaps the competition will be fierce. There will be tournaments at the Fan Jam too, including such titles as Fighting Climax, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd, and Sonic Heroes. Other activities including the screening of fan films, a cosplay contest, and karaoke featuring Sega music.

There are also quite a few panelists who have their own forums scheduled already – be sure to check this link out to read the descriptions and profiles of the persons involved!

The GoGetFunding page is still up, so if you’d like to donate go ahead and stop by to show your support. The team has come a long way and they’re still not done. There are still two and a half months until the Fan Jam is held!

More announcements are planned for the Fan Jam, so stay tuned for additional news in the future.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD Samurai and Fortuner Trailers

The rollout for character class trailers have begun for 7th Dragon III: Code VFD. This first set contains the Samurai and Fortuner classes. The Samurai is an all-rounder, a straightforward pick-up-and-play class. Pretty modern get-up for a Samurai, I’ll say that. Maybe it’s just like Gemini Sunrise from Sakura Wars says, and it’s all about having the Samurai Soul. Anyway, the Fortuner is slightly less straightforward. They have paper defenses, but have strong debuff capabilities and techniques with great destructive power.

This game has eight classes, so we should expect at least three more sets of trailers for character classes, perhaps with another game system trailer or two along the way. Continue reading to check out the trailers!

Persona 4: Dancing All Night Nanako and Margaret English Trailers

The English trailers for Persona 4: Dancing All Night featuring Nanako and Margaret are now out. With these two, we’re at the tail end of the character trailers. Nanako is the cousin of Yu Narukami, good-natured and supportive. Margaret’s elegant and coy personality come through in her dance, but keep in mind that she’s available only in the Free Dance Mode and unlocked after fulfilling special conditions in-game.

Valkyria Chronicles Mod For Civilization V – Principality of Gallia

The fan content love for Valkyria Chronicles continues with a mod of the PC strategy game Civlization V. The Civilization games are complex games where the player is tasked with a leading a civilization to growth and promoting its survival by managing many facets of its development, while keeping in mind such factors as the resources needed to sustain your civilization and your environment, besides the other civilizations you interact with (maybe in a not-so-friendly manner.)

The mod “Principality of Gallia” adds Gallia as a civilization choice besides the preset choices given with the base Civilization V game. As you many know, Gallia is a small, humble country with access to the ocean and rivers adding to its lushness. It’s also rich in the all-purpose mineral Ragnite, which invites The Empire’s invasion in the first Valkyria Chronicles game. In Civilization one typically manages resources and this mod adds Ragnite as a resource. Civilization games are conveyed to the player through the vantage point of a civilization leader, and the leader for Principality of Gallia is Welkin Gunther.

Neptune VS SeHa Girl

Hyperdimension Great War Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls: Dream Fusion Special Launches in November

Siliconera writes that Hyperdimension Great War Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls: Dream Fusion Special will release in Japan on November 26. Not a bad time too. The game will be available in both standard (¥6,800 pre-tax) and limited (¥8,800 pre-tax) editions. Neptune VS SeHa Girls is centered around two protagonist mascot characters: IF or Iffy representing Idea Factory (bottom-left character on the featured image), and Hatsumi Sega or Segami/Segamin representing Sega (bottom-right character on the featured image.)

No word on localization as of yet. The Neptunia series has a mostly good localization record, but that might not say anything about this title’s current prospects.

By the way, I’m not sure I’ve seen a game title as long as this before. Long race horse names, long light novel names, long gamer tags and long band names, but this is something else. Kudos to all involved.

Legend of Legacy Liber

Legend of Legacy Character Trailers – Garnet and Liber + Recent Twitch Stream Footage

AtlusUSA’s new character trailer for The Legend of Legacy  shows off two very different personalities. Liber is the Treasure Hunter, a “spirited scavenger with a taste for adventure.” Without a care in the world save for himself, he ventures to Avalon for money. In his battle segments we see him lay waste to enemies with his bow and arrow techniques. As a party member, Liber lends himself to a supporting role. Garnet is the Templar, a “loyal knight of the Holy Order.” Unlike Liber, she is highly committed and not so carefree. Garnet travels to Avalon to weed out those spreading rumors of gods dwelling among the living…but one has to wonder about the details in such situations as these. Garnet’s battle footage show her ramming through enemies with a shield and attacking enemies with a two-handed sword, and as a party member she’s designed to be a balanced fighter.

Additionally, members of AtlusUSA’s PR team streamed themselves playing the game this Wednesday for about an hour and a half. The footage has been uploaded to YouTube. Check it out below if you missed it, or if you’d like a chance to really immerse yourself in the game! If you want a fresh experience, you might not want to watch for too long. Especially if you plan on trying out Garnet’s scenario, which was the one chosen for the stream.

DBFC Ignition Tatsuya

Tatsuya Shiba (The Irregular at Magic High School) Will be Playable in Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition

Shortly after Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition was announced, there were talks of “upgrading” one of the assist characters to being a playable option. If ever there were a candidate likely to receive that blessing, it would be Tatsuya Shiba, the main character of The Irregular at Magic High School.

And behold! Dengeki Online has just broken news of his arrival, joining the ranks of this iteration’s new playable characters following Emi and Quenser. Tatsuya is the highly popular (and polarizing) protagonist of the Irregular series. Additionally, Miyuki Shiba, who was playable in Fighting Climax, is now selectable as one of the support options in team composition. Tatsuya is set to be a playable in arcades sometime this Fall. As a character he’s designed for all player skill levels.

Do note that when crafting a team, you cannot choose any character more than once. No Tatsuya leads with Tatsuya assists.

There’s no way Tatsuya is the last character to be added in Ignition, so it’ll be interesting to see who the next character is.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD Character Creation Trailer

AnimeNewsNetwork recently noticed that Sega uploaded a video onto their Japanese YouTube channel for 7th Dragon III: Code VFD offering a look into character creation. When creating your characters, you can customize them through:

  • a variety of preset character models
  • choosing from a list of voice sets separated by gender (ANN notes that 40 voice actors and actresses contributed lines for this title!)
  • which “type” they are from (referring to whether they are from Atlantis of the Past, Tokyo of the Present, or Eden of the Future) that affect color changes in the character models
  • one of the eight character classes (of course)

The game is set for release on October 15th in Japan with no word on localization as of yet. ANN describes this title as the last 7th Dragon game in their own writeup.

Sega’s Sam Mullen Talks Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Localization and Much More

Sam Mullen of Sega spoke at length with EventHubs in a recently published interview about the localization process of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, among other subjects.

One of the more interesting comments involves part of Mullen’s motivation for supporting the localization of DBFC; he notes that when he became aware of the game’s development at around 2012, Sega as a company lacked for well-known 2D fighters. I’ve taken note of this too actually and I share the exact same sentiment. One thing about 2D fighters is that they’re easily accessible, in part due to the already existing prominence of franchises like Street Fighter, the Versus games made by Capcom, Mortal Kombat, and the Arc Systems Works fighters Guilty Gear and Blazblue. What with DBFC’s popular characters and ease of entry, Mullen thought DBFC had great potential for the West.

Games that feature characters across a large amount of franchises tend to invite discussion on the difficulty of licensing characters and how that might impact either roster choices or localization chances, but Mullen also notes that licensing is less of an issue than it otherwise might have been in another game considering all characters here are a part of the Dengeki Bunko imprint. Later in the interview Mullen does say that some aspects of the localization (as far as translating, and understanding what sort of references characters are making, and the fact that some of the source material hasn’t made its way West in an official capacity) were difficult and required some research!

With Valkyria Chronicles’ success on Steam, EventHubs asked Mullen about DFBC and Sega’s thoughts on PC support moving forward. The issue of PC support for fighting games is a recurring one. While arcades and consoles are generally seen as the primary platforms for the genre, we’ve seen more initiative from companies like Capcom and Arc System Works on this front over time. Mullen acknowledges that PC is a growing platform, but also stated that PC as a platform isn’t as strong in Japan. This was actually in response to other comments made by the interviewer that touched on the idea that Sega West and Sega of Japan would seem to have different game development plans for PC. Mullen also added that generally Sega’s localization team opts to localize products on platforms that Sega of Japan has already developed, with the idea of minimizing release delays from adding other platforms.

EventHubs also broached the subject of Ignition, the expanded release of DBFC. Mullen says that Sega is going to focus on supporting DBFC first and then make a decision on where to move with Ignition. Mullen also says that he’s aware that there’s a tendency for some fighting game players to opt not to purchase a game in anticipation for an expanded release in the future.

Speculative on my part, but it would seem to me that Sam Mullen has some pulse on fighting games and the communities that develop around them. He was present for EVO 2015 and has been present for smaller DBFC tournaments for conventions he’s attended. He also acknowledges a bifurcation that often happens with fighting games – the hardcore audience that enjoys technical or competitive play, and a softer audience whose primary interests lie with character personalities and relationships, story or dialogue, and music or art (though not to say that there’s no overlap, as people often taken interest in “both sides” too.) In any case, having some familiarity with particular genres would seem to make it easier to plan on how to handle its release!
