Phantasy Star Online 2 Stage Play Coming to Japan

Sega is running a stage play for Phantasy Star Online 2, titled “Phantasy Star Online 2 -ON STAGE-“. It will run from December 4th to the 7th. The play is a project meant to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the first Phantasy Star Online game’s release. More anniversary projects besides the play are reportedly on the way and yet to be announced. The official website for -ON STAGE- can be seen here. Sega staffers involved with the Phantasy Star franchise will have supervisory roles in the play, including Satoshi Sakai (producer) and Yuya Kimura (director.)

The play involves a young high school student who logs into Phantasy Star Online 2 on an otherwise normal day, but quickly finds his online adventures going awry. Tickets for the play come with a PSO2 download code for a costume themed after the fictional high school in the play (apparently also including a special sword unique to the costume) and a one-time use item called the Color Change Pass, the purpose of which hasn’t been thoroughly specified yet.

Strolling Through Kamurocho and Soutenbori in Yakuza Zero

Sega recently broadcasted a five-minute video of Yakuza Zero, an occasion notable for being the first footage of the game in motion and also for being broadcast live. The focus of the video is the showcasing of the look and feel of Kamurocho and Soutenbori. The video follows Kiryu and Majima as they stroll through the towns their campaigns take place in. It starts with a walk through Kamurocho and spends the last minute and a half or so showing off Soutenbori. There is no action or fighting. Personally, the long canal in Soutenbori has more of an impact than what I saw in Kamurocho, though I found it nice to see Club Sega again.

The new Phantasy Star Nova demo hit PSN in Japan on November 13th. The demo is a retooled experience, featuring all of the changes tri-Ace and Sega made based off of the previous demo’s feedback. Ahead of the impending November 27th release date in Japan, I’d like to take look at some more features in Phantasy Star Nova outlined in this PSUBlog post, which had been authored before the new demo was out and takes a comprehensive look at various new media. Sega’s New Nine-Minute Phantasy Star Nova Promotional Trailer

Gematsu reports that Sega recently produced a new promotional movie for Phantasy Star Nova, ahead of its impending November 27 release. It’s meant to be a look at the major selling points of Phantasy Star Nova much like the TGS 2014 trailer; however this new trailer is even more comprehensive and detailed. While it treads over some familiar ground, with such elements as the story prologue and character creation, we do get some peeks at elements of the game that were previously not highlighted, including a look at the quest map, skill board, and home base development and customization. It appears that this video might have been made before the Valkyria Chronicles III DLC collaboration was officially announced, as this particular collaboration was not listed in the collaboration section of the video

Be sure to check it out after hitting the “Continue Reading” button. Also, check out the Gematsu article linked at the start of this writeup for a new screenshot gallery to browse through!

Shining Resonance’s B.A.N.D. System Highlighted in New Video, In-Game Costumes Highlighted

Sega has released another video demoing one of the game mechanics in Shining Resonance. Gematsu shares that this new video features the B.A.N.D. system. The B.A.N.D. system refers both to the configuration of your active party members (most importantly, who is chosen as the player character or “Center”) and the special benefit that comes with a B.A.N.D. Attack. B.A.N.D. Attacks are triggered by filling up at least one third of the gauge on the left side of the screen during battles, now officially known as the Battle Mana Performance gauge.

When activating a B.A.N.D. Attack, certain buffs will be bestowed to your party members based on who is placed as the Center character. The buffs will steadily deplete the entirety of your Battle Mana Performance gauge, regardless of whether or not an entire bar is full all of the way. What isn’t immediately clear is what strength the B.A.N.D. Attacks will be at when activating the Attack with a gauge that isn’t full, but based on looking on the glowing gauge numbers you’ll only get the B.A.N.D. Attack strength level of the highest-leveled and filled gauge. So even if, for example, you have one and one half of a gauge full, it seems you’ll only get the buff strength of gauge level one instead of gauge level two. Depending on how the buffs may vary, it’s an interesting consideration to note in battles. Perhaps depending on the situation, it may be better to fill your gauge all the way to the MAX level or go for lower-leveled but more frequent buffs from B.A.N.D. Attacks.

Also, in the video that Gematsu linked we get some little details confirmed that may be of interest. First, one of the bonuses of having Kirika as the Center is that when the B.A.N.D. Attack is activated, Kouryuu Irvan’s berserk mode will be nullified and he will revert to Yuuma Irvan. This was a special ability of hers that was teased early on in promotional materials for the game, but it’s nice to see confirmation for how it works. In addition to that, Kirika’s outfit changes color depending on the Rune Song used for the B.A.N.D. Attack, as Siliconera writes here. (More information on Rune Songs can be seen here.) If a seasonal-themed Rune Song is chosen and Kirika is the center, her costume’s colors and designs will reflect that Song’s season in battle. Sonia will also have a special costume option, which I will highlight after the video later in this article. Lastly, it seems that during B.A.N.D. Attacks, Yuuma takes on the role of conductor instead of directly playing an instrument. Perhaps it’s fitting for someone positioned as the main character!

Etrian Odyssey II Untold Shows off UI Elements and Takes Cues From Persona Q

It’s been a while since we’ve written about Etrian Odyssey II Untold, but the official Japanese website’s blog section for the game has received more frequent updates as of late. Some of these updates are quite extensive and talk about gameplay, while others highlight promotional activities for the game. Recent blog posts include pictures of promotional merchandise and a crossover promotion with the popular maid/culture cafe schatz-kiste, where Etrian Odyssey-themed items will be featured on their menu.

Anyway, Siliconera wrote an article recently detailing a blog post that showed off how some of the in-game menus look, and included some very short videos of the game’s Classic Mode from one of Atlus’s blog posts.

Siliconera’s article also touches on gameplay elements borrowed from Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Treasure chest icons featured on maps will change to reflect being opened. Another borrowed feature from Persona Q is the presence of a confirmation window to verify that the player is OK with initial commands issued during battle. This is a feature that can be turned off of the player chooses to do so.

To check out some of the videos that Siliconera highlighted, continue reading below!

Shining Resonance: Yuuma Irvan’s Kouryuu Form Detailed

Gematsu writes that Sega recently uploaded a new video for Shining Resonance that details Yuuma Irvan as Kouryuu Irvan, the dragon. A central part of the story of Shining Resonance and Irvan’s character is that Irvan has a human form (Yuuma), but naturally exists as a dragon created without artificial assistance: a rarity for his time.

It turns out that players can quite easily switch between Irvan’s dragon and human forms without inconvenience as long as Irvan has MP; it is possible there is otherwise no cap on the number of transformations. By default, battles begin with Irvan in his human form, but by controlling him and pressing both the L1 and R1 buttons, players can activate the dragon form Kouryuu Irvan. Irvan’s MP will steadily decrease but your AP (Action Points, a numerical cap on individual actions) will not change. Another bonus of activating Yuuma Irvan’s dragon form is that your party’s MP consumption is cut down by a certain proportion.

If Kouryuu Irvan’s MP drops to zero, then the much talked-about and dreaded berserk state results. During Kouryuu’s berserk mode, he is uncontrollable and attacks indiscriminately, sometimes affecting party members. While apparently Kirika can revert a berserk Kouryuu Irvan to his human form, it might be worth sparing the trouble and pressing L1 and R1 before your enemies can capitalize on your moment of weakness.

Check out the minute-long video below! There are descriptions written in Japanese written within the video, which may be of interest to any of our readers who can understand Japanese.

Vergil and Sephiroth, step aside. Shining Resonance reveals their own take on the cold, katana-wielding pretty boy character by officially revealing Jenius in a recent press release. Minigames in Yakuza Zero

Minigames and side content always seem to be an important part of the Yakuza series experience. Yakuza Zero will likely uphold that tradition with the new games planned that this Siliconera article teases.

To start, the presence of Sega arcade classics have been a unique selling point in marketing the game. The Sega classics that will be playable include Space Harrier, Outrun, Hang-On and Fantasy Zone, and will be available to either Kazuma Kiryu or Goro Majima. In addition, the games will also have the option of being played through the Playstation Vita. You can find these games at the classic game center locations in Yakuza Zero. The game center will also feature staples such as the crane game.
