Genei Ibun Roku #FE Maiko

Genei Ibun Roku #FE: Maiko Character Trailer

The character trailer for Maiko Shimazaki from Genei Ibun Roku #FE has recently been uploaded. She’s the president of the entertainment company that the party characters of this game work for. Maiko’s personality seems to reflect that of a friendly “older sister” type character who is familiar and casual with the talent she manages. Since she’s playful and has a mature appearance this invites some chaos (read: embarrassment, confusion) on the part of her poor, young fledgling idols. As someone with some background in the industry (gravure) she’s probably still dependable in spite of her propensity for teasing. There’s no battle footage of her in this trailer, unfortunately, but she is a playable character.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation – 2nd PV, OP Theme is Previewed

A second PV for Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation has been released by the anime’s production team. The first episode will be screened at Tokyo on December 29, and the episode’s public air date is set for February 7.

On a separate but related note: Sympathy 2015, a concert event celebrating 15 years of Phantasy Star Online, also recently passed, and Shouta Aoi (voice of Itsuki Tachibana, a protagonist character in the anime) was on hand to debut the OP for the anime at Sympathy 2015. The song is called “絶世スターゲイト” (Zessei Stargate, or Unrivaled Stargate) and the CD for it will go on sale on February 3.

By the way, if you didn’t already know, there’s a Japanese PSO2 the Animation Twitter account. Sega’s official PSO2 the Animation website is here.

Valkyria: Azure Revolution – Battle Demo, Difficulty, and Perma-death

Gematsu noted that Hachima Kikou published an article featuring some insights into Sega’s plan for Valkyria: Azure Revolution. Specifically, director Takeshi Ozawa and producer Youichi Shimosato touch upon what sort of playing experience the demo for Azure Revolution represents, and also mention some additional gameplay characteristics being implemented into the game.

These characteristics include permanent death that impacts available side-story events, and the suggestion of a relatively high difficulty level. The development team carefully considered the introduction of permadeath into the game, but in the end moved forward with it. Death as a theme is apparently quite important to Azure Revolution (certainly, if the dramatic tagline for the game is any indication) so the team saw it as important to incorporate permadeath. If you lose a character in-game, the main story campaign will still continue, but you will lose access to character-specific side events. While you could permanently lose certain characters in Valkyria Chronicles, character events were not attached to them. It remains to be seen if any characters will be exempt from permadeath as was the case with the Command Point characters in Valkyria Chronicles. The development team does say that it will be possible to experience all character events if players progress through the game correctly, but this might be difficult. Speaking of difficulty, director Ozawa had this to say (courtesy of Gematsu’s translation:)

There are obstacles in the game and we are thinking about how to go about them without toning them down. We plan on including something like an easy mode to help with the obstacles.

That’s pretty telling. Seems that there’s a particular type of gameplay experience that they want to preserve. Easy mode should be popular with more consumers, so this doesn’t seem like too bad of an idea.

As for the demo, producer Shimosato says that it isn’t a beta test, and that it’s supposed to “win you over right off the bat.” Remember that Valkyria Chronicles Remaster is releasing in February while Valkyria: Azure Revolution is releasing in Winter 2016 in Japan. The very early demo release will allow the development team to incorporate feedback with minimal shock to development schedules. The main point of the demo is to experience a preview of the battle system (which they also mention will feature a level-up mechanic!) For waiting Valkyria fans and new prospects, the battle system is most probably the most anticipated feature. It seems the development team has a plan in place to both convey their ideas and work with some fan feedback. While superficially the demo might seem like a beta test, the development team seems to have a strong idea of what they want to do.

I myself anxiously anticipate news of battle system!

Genei Ibun Roku #FE Tiki

Genei Ibun Roku #FE: TiKi, Bloom Palace Trailers

Next in the character trailer spotlight for Genei Ibun Roku #FE is TiKi. Tiki is a name borrowed from Fire Emblem, and her character in #FE takes the form of what is essentially a Vocaloid. She welcomes you to the Bloom Palace and refers to Itsuki, the protagonist, affectionately as her “older brother.” Such familiarity throws off the protagonist, but being the gentleman that he is, the protagonist doesn’t actually object to this. Or else TiKi would probably just call Itsuki a dummy or something.

On the note of the Bloom Palace: it’s a sort of central hub where you as the player can access special party customization features that you can’t change simply by going to the main party menu. Notably you can use Performa to customize a Carnage for your Mirage – Carnage being the weapon that your character and his/her Mirage/alter ego uses to fight, and such customizable attributes include elemental affinity and attack power. Performa can also be used to enhance what are called Radiant Skills, which include improvements for base stats, Session attacks (which boost Performa gains,) or other normal offensive skills. Radiant Skills also improve your ability to succeed in the (real) entertainment world. At the Bloom Palace, you can also Class Change your characters. Class Changes are generally meant to progress your character’s capabilities as you unlock new Classes; they allow you access to new Carnage configurations and Skills. The second trailer posted for this article offers a comprehensive visual look into these processes.

Bloom Palace is a lovely garden paradise that suits TiKi’s cherub-like appearance. Let’s check both out after the break.

Valkyria Azure Revolution Trailer

Valkyria Azure Revolution: First Trailer, Website Update

The first trailer for Valkyria: Azure Revolution was recently published by Sega. It’s cinematic and features Amleth and Ophelia as they participate in a battle. Brynhildr, the enemy Valkyria, makes an appearance at the end. We knew that there would be a demo included with Valkyria Chronicles Remaster for PS4, but this trailer confirms that an Azure Revolution Battle Demo is included with Remaster.

Gematsu noticed that this same Azure Revolution trailer was uploaded to a Playstation Taiwan YouTube account, and that Azure Revolution will be receiving a Mandarin Chinese localization. This localized version is set to release in the Winter of next year – same as the Japanese version. I wonder when an English version will be released?

Anyway, Sega’s official Azure Revolution website has been updated with a large batch of screenshots, and short character profiles for the three known characters. It also offers info recaps, including the story premise and the battle/graphics systems.

Yakuza Kiwami Majima

Yakuza Kiwami Comprehensive Preview Trailer, Boxart Available

Sega has just published a new trailer for Yakuza Kiwami. It features narration from Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima’s voice actors. The trailer shows three battle styles for Kiryu – these are the ones that were present in Yakuza Zero. In addition, there’s a fourth battle style that can be seen throughout the video, marked in red in the upper left during fights. It also appears that you can speak to Majima in a hostess club. Alongside a new feature that allows you to fight Majima anywhere, this all seems to me a natural progression of their relationship, to be honest. Except for the whole being the first game in the series thing. Anyway, the rest of the trailer shows off the many minigames present in Yakuza Kiwami and a look at the revamped Kamurocho. It clocks in at four and a half minutes, be sure to check it out. The trailer also mentions that Yakuza Kiwami comes with a download code for a Yakuza 6 demo, in case you forgot!

Amazon Japan has updated the product pages for Yakuza Kiwami with boxart for both PS3 and PS4 versions. I can’t wait until we get product pages for localized versions of this game! *hint hint*

You can see all of the media after the break!

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir 8-Bit Browser Version Confirmed, Oswald Gameplay

After a successful Twitter campaign, Atlus has confirmed development of an 8-bit browser version of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. Thanks to everyone who participated! Symbiotic and functional interaction between companies and their fans is always a good thing to see, and this campaign yielded a pretty cool result.

In addition to this, Atlus has also published a couple of new trailers to promote Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. The first one I’ve attached is a short but cool comparison demo between Leifthrasir’s PS2 and PS4 versions. Leifthrasir is a remake of Odin Sphere for the PS2, which is being redeveloped for the PS3, PS4, and Vita. The second video demos Oswald, one of the story leads, and his fighting capabilities.

Hyperdimension Neptunia X Sega Hard Girls Gameplay / Character Class Additional Info

A new trailer for Hyperdimension Neptunia X Sega Hard Girls Dream Fusion Special demos some basic gameplay and class changes. The first two and half minutes or so is devoted to roaming through dungeons. The remainder of the trailer covers event scenes and a short battle clip.

Additionally Gematsu reports that the official website for the game has been updated with information on changing classes. Each character in Dream Fusion Special starts with a specific character class to which the game allots a certain configuration of Special Skills. They often come in the form of passive added benefits to your enemy encounters. For example, “Impossible Evasion” which will drop your character’s HP to 1 if they are hit with an attack that would have otherwise KO’d them. Each character also has a unique set of class options available to them, and more class options become available as one progresses through the game.

Check out the trailer after the break! Dream Special Fusion is coming to Japan in just under a week!

Val AzuRevo Title

Valkyria Promotional Blitz: Teaser Websites, Screens, and a Twitter Account!

There’s no two ways about it; Sega of Japan is really betting on Valkyria’s growth as a franchise.

Sega of Japan has created a Twitter account for the Valkyria franchise. Give them a follow! If the Twitter accounts for other franchises like Yakuza and Sakura Wars are any indication, the Sega staffers for each franchise are quite dedicated and take note of all sorts of minutiae related to the franchise (the Yakuza and Sakura Wars accounts occasionally posted information on their characters being present in Project X Zone 2, for example.)

The Valkyria franchise seems to be addressed on this page as the “Valkyria Project”, so as to encompass the Chronicles games (Valkyria Chronicles 1-3) and Azure Revolution. We can probably expect to see it addressed as such in the future.

The first tweet of the Valkyria Twitter account announces Sega’s Valkyria portal website. It features links to official websites for all console/handheld Valkyria games at the bottom, and at the top there are three tabs. The first offers summaries and images for each Valkyria game (including Duel.) The second is an anime tab, with pages for the anime adaptation of the first game and the Valkyria Chronicles 3 OVA. The third tab is a Goods tab; it’s a cataloging of Valkyria Chronicles media and merchandise. It doesn’t offer product pages or purchase links for everything (though some items do have purchase links) but it’s an effort that is much respected.

Next, let’s check out the promotional website for Valkyria: Azure Revolution. Suffice it to say, at the moment it won’t take you too long to check out the whole site, though I like the background colors. Worth noting is the caption for the logo – it could be a tell for the plot events of Azure Revolution. If you missed the release of screenshots for the game earlier today, check out our writeup.

A website for the PS4 remaster of Valkyria Chronicles – Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, is also available. It features a large collection of screenshots and details the plot, gameplay and visual features, and added DLC content (all previous DLC episodes, Hard EX mode) present in the remaster. PSN trophies will also be available for this game. You may recall that the absence of trophies was met with some backlash after the game’s PS3 release. The planned boxart for the can be seen below:

Valkyria PS4 remaster JPn boxartHere’s to hoping the West follows suit! Valkyria’s second wind could be quite the storm.

SMT IV cast

Shin Megami Tensei IV Characters to Return for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final

Famitsu reports that the main characters of Shin Megami Tensei IV are set to return for the upcoming sequel: Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final. We’ve seen promotional images of Flynn, the protagonist, floating around earlier, but now we have the confirmation of his return along with the return of the three characters who represent the paths of law, chaos, and balance. Isabeau, Jonathan, and Walter will be returning, and their voice actors from the Japanese release are reprising their roles as well.

There are some story developments for each of the characters in this game as well. Isabeau is available as a partner character for this Final’s protagonist, as her goal is to avoid the Polytheistic Alliance of gods (a faction representing multiple entities) from contacting and working with Flynn. With the Outlaw Hunters (a group that this game’s protagonist works in) and the Alliance naturally opposed, Isabeau works towards their common interests. Jonathan and Merkabah are assimilated, and the entity oppose the efforts of the Alliance. Walter sacrificed himself on behalf of Lucifer, but he occasionally returns to his human form and has kept the memories of his life that Lucifer retained. Both Lucifer and Merkabah are naturally opposed to the aims of the Alliance. Lastly, Flynn is regarded as a great hero and the Alliance pursues him to advance their ideology.

It appears special bonus content will also be unlocked if you have existing Shin Megami Tensei IV save data on your 3DS. No words on the specifics of this content as of yet! Keep an eye out.

Credit for initial announcement goes to Gematsu.
