Sympathy 2015

Sympathy 2015 – A Phantasy Star Online Series 15th Anniversary Concert

Sega announced a new entry in the Sympathy concert series with Sympathy 2015. The last Sympathy concert took place in 2013, and at the time it was commemorating 25 years since the first Phantasy Star title was released. It featured music across the entire Phantasy Star franchise. Sympathy 2015 will celebrate 15 years since the first Phantasy Star Online title and will be devoted to the Phantasy Star Online subseries.

Sega’s official webpage for the concert event can be seen here. The event times are up, alongside ticket prices (a little on the pricey side!) The event is scheduled for November 23 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center.

Sega Announces TV Anime for Phantasy Star Online 2

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Phantasy Star Online franchise, Sega has announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will get an anime adaption named Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation. Little is known about the project, other than that it will have an original storyline which takes place on Earth in the near future. You can find the official website for the project here. The anime is scheduled to be released in 2016.

Of course, the announcement of the anime only reminds us of the fact that Phantasy Star Online 2 still hasn’t been released in the West. Many have given up on seeing the game localized, although Sega still hasn’t officially canceled the title. As unlikely as it may seem, we still hope to see a surprise announcement for the game.

Phantasy Star Online 2: Guilty Gear and Blazblue Content, PSO2es Gets Shining Resonance Chips

In the newest PSO Live Stream event, Sega announced new collaboration content with the Guilty Gear and Blazblue franchises, prominent fighting game IPs that belong to Arc System Works. Of course, Sega is no stranger to collaborating with franchises that aren’t in-house as far as Phantasy Star Online 2 is concerned.

However, a fun fact: Guilty Gear was owned by Sega for a couple of years following the merger of Sammy and Sega. While Arc System Works developed the Guilty Gear games, Sammy owned the IP. In any event, years later Arc System works would reclaim the IP and eventually develop the Guilty Gear Xrd series. And in the meantime, they launched another popular fighting game series called Blazblue.

Blazblue itself was party to a collaboration with Sega’s Border Break a year ago. The campaign was stylized as “BB X BB.” By visiting the respective game websites at the time of the collaboration, fans could unlock special items or treats for each game. It’s hard to figure out what prompted such a collaboration as the franchises are noticeably dissimilar, but in the end perhaps nothing gets in the way of true love.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Receiving SEGA Collaboration Content

The newest edition of the PSO2 Live Broadcast aired not too long ago. While it announced plenty of news regarding game elements such as Scratches, Quests, and the Casino, I’d like to take a moment to focus on this broadcast’s announcement of Sega collaboration content. Phantasy Star Online 2 is no stranger to promotion with franchises outside of Sega ownership, of course, but I personally think it’s nice to see Sega celebrating the franchises and people within the company.

The featured image shown above describes Scratch content for Shining Resonance. This includes weapon skins, character accessories, and costumes themed after Yuuma, Sonia, Kirika, Rinna, and Marion. Voice clips or “tickets” will also be available for these characters, too. This content is planned for release in the middle of June.

Sega Donating Revenue from Their F2P Games to Nepal Earthquake Recovery Effort

On April 25, Nepal was hit by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, killing over 5000 people and injuring twice as many. In order to help the country and its people recover from the disaster, Sega has now announced that they will be donating two million yen, to be administered by the Japan Red Cross. Additionally, they will be donating revenue obtained from in-game purchases of four of their free-to-play games, namely Phantasy Star Online 2, Chain Chronicle, Hortensia Saga and Puyo Puyo!! Quest. Out of the four games, only Chain Chronicle is available in the west, but the donations appear to be tied to the Japanese version. In Phantasy Star Online 2, all the money from in-game purchases of the cosmo atomizer item (up until May 31) will be donated to the recovery effort. For the other titles, similar donations will be announced in-game, and will run from May 1 to 11:59 p.m. on May 3.

For those looking to make a donation of their own, the Better Business Bureau has a webpage with a list of charities.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Gets Tales of Zestiria Costumes in Japan

Phantasy Star Online 2 has seen a lot of cross-overs with other gaming franchises, and Bandai Namco’s Tales of Zestiria has now joined that list. Players can now acquire costumes from some of the main characters of Tales of Zesiria, more specifically Sorey, Dezel, Lailah and Rose. Interestingly, a costume for the character Alisha doesn’t seem to be included, and perhaps for good reason. There was quite a bit of controversy surrounding her character and the release of Tales of Zestiria (more information on that can be found in this Siliconera article). Be warned that visiting the article will expose you to significant spoilers regarding the development of Tales of Zestiria’s plot.

Below you can find images of the costumes that are now available in Phantasy Star Online 2. Sadly, the release of the game is still officially “delayed” in North America and Europe, with no word on when or if it’ll ever be released. In a few months time, it’ll be 3 years since the game was confirmed for the West

Celebrating the New Year with Phantasy Star Online 2 in Japan

Happy New Year, Segalization readers!

Sega is ringing in the new year for the next two weeks in Phantasy Star Online 2. From January 1st to January 14th, the ARKS Lobby will receive Japanese New Year-themed decorative touches, according to this PSUBlog entry. The featured image shows off a red Shinto shrine gate featuring a pair of Rappies at the lobby’s center.

PSO2NewYearNyauAlso, a special Nyau called the Neujahr Nyau will appear during this two-week period. Players can either receive a kumade-looking Bullet Bow or a harisen-inspired Sword upon defeating it. The kumade (meaning hand of a bear, which inspires the tool’s shape) is meant to rake in good luck. The harisen is a paper fan: a popular and enduring Japanese cultural icon .

Here’s to another year of Sega games, and hopefully more localizations. Let’s ride the momentum of Yakuza 5’s localization and Valkyria Chronicles coming to the PC as we move forward! Be sure to tell us what you want out of Sega in 2015!
