UPDATE: Sony are apparently sending out e-mails to people with a EU PlayStation Network account containing a unique code (one time use only) that grants an additional 10% discount to your entire PS Store cart. While it seems to be intended as an incentive to buy games from the January Sales, the description suggests it applies to any items in your cart (which the exception of pre-orders, subscriptions, PlayStation Now rentals and video on demand). However, it seems not everyone with a EU PSN account has received an e-mail with a code at this point, and it’s not clear if more e-mails are being sent out. There’s not a lot of time to use the code, as it expires this Sunday, January 17th at 23:59 GMT.

Yakuza 5 Gets 2nd Place in “Best PS3 Game” Category of the 2015 PlayStation Blog Awards

Sony has revealed the results from the official 2015 PlayStation.Blog Game of the Year Awards, and Yakuza 5 has ranked in the top three in two categories. It got 2nd place in the “Best PS3” games category (behind Metal Gear Solid V) and 3rd place in the “Best Digital Release” category (behind Rocket League and Life is Strange). Yakuza 4, which fans could also vote for as “Best Free PS Plus game”, unfortunately didn’t get enough votes to rank in the top 7. On the side of Atlus, Persona 4: Dancing All Night managed to rank 3rd as “Best PS Vita Game”.

It’s certainly nice to see Yakuza 5 getting recognition from the gaming community, despite being released this late in the PS3’s lifetime! With this, and Yakuza 0 also confirmed to be localized for the West on PS4, things are starting to look up for the future of the Yakuza franchise in the West.

Yakuza Kiwami Shinohara

Yakuza Kiwami: Story PV, New Character Introduction

Sega has produced a new promotional video for Yakuza Kiwami and uploaded it to their Japanese YouTube account for the Yakuza franchise. It’s an eight minute trailer that skims over the story of Kiwami, a remake of the first Yakuza title. We see here Kiryu’s sacrifice and Nishiki’s descent as he is overcome with guilt and inadequacy. While one man falls and then rises from the ashes, the other rises to power but falls into corruption.

Of course we see other key characters receiving some spotlight in this trailer, with Haruka’s introduction (“I am not ‘omae’/you. I am Haruka”) and Majima being his lovable self, who will be around to harass Kiryu at the player’s leisure. A new character introduced specially for Kiwami is Shinichi Shinohara, a videogame representation of a real-life retired judo talent. He’s the new face shown in the featured image for this article, but he’s not shown in the Story video. Kiryu is supposed to be his tour guide for Kamuro-cho, but Shinohara is also a participant in a underground fighting club and invites Kiryu to participate. Between him and Beat Takeshi in Yakuza 6, Yakuza’s certainly got its celebrity cameos covered. Not a bad look for the franchise.

Yakuza Kiwami’s Japanese release date of January 21, 2016 is fast approaching. Check out the trailer below!
