SMT IV Final faction

First Shin Megami Tensei IV Final PV!

Atlus has concluded their stream for Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, and with it comes the arrival of its first promotional video.

We have a little more details on this game. There is a conflict between monotheism and polytheism woven into the story. The course of the plot follows one central progression (not necessarily adhering to the standard law-chaos-neutral trifecta,) but still allows for multiple endings. The protagonist is completely silent this time; previously in Shin Megami Tensei IV most dialogue scenes were voiced though not all of the script received voicing.

Gameplay-wise, the system from Shin Megami Tensei IV is receiving a variety of additions and touches. A notable change is the introduction of the Partner and Assist Attack systems in battle. Partners are human characters who can assist you during battle. In addition, the game will feature more than 450 demons, with some previously absent demons (like the Mermaid) returning. Carryovers from Shin Megami Tensei IV will also receive balance changes to their stats. There will also be UI changes to reflect a new aesthetic and new mechanics.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Final for 3DS Announced

Atlus of Japan struck suddenly with the reveal of Shin Megami Tensei IV Final for Nintendo 3DS via Famitsu. It’s due for release in Japan on February 10, 2016. Contrary to what the subtitle and the name of the game might suggest, this isn’t meant to be an expanded release (in the same vein of Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker) – this is a new game set in the same world that Shin Megami Tensei IV took place in. There will be new characters, and perhaps some returning faces too.

While Persona 5 seems to have red as a recurring theme color (as do the Persona games in general) it seems that SMT IV Final is following in its stead by making liberal use of the color green. I personally like the look of mixing black and green…

There’s a preview site up right now, but nothing really in the way of content is on it. We can expect more this coming Sunday at 7PM (Japan time) when a Niconico stream featuring a more detailed reveal of the game goes live.

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker EU Preorder Page Up, Some Bonus Items Absent

NISAmerica, who has been handling distribution of Atlus-related products in Europe in recent times, put up a product page that is taking preorders for Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker. Early copies for European gamers will include the decal set that came with North American early copies, but unfortunately other additional goods including the bonus soundtrack CD and collector’s outer box are absent.

Copies are priced at £24.99, which is not too far a departure (slightly lower, even) from the standard retail price schedule of North American games. Maybe the absence of the CD and outer box contributed to the relatively lower price? The release date is still set for Fall 2015, as of this article’s writing.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker Dated for Europe

NIS America announced the release dates of Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker not too long ago. Etrian Mystery Dungeon is set to release on September 11, while DS2:RB will release on October 30. Physical and digital presences are planned for both games.

Off of the news of Etrian Odyssey II Untold’s release on February of next year, I’m of the opinion that the pacing of these Atlus releases feels slightly better knowing DS2:RB is coming at the end of October. Of course, this is not to suggest everyone in EU is planning on buying all of the Atlus games to begin with (DS2:RB and the Etrian Odyssey games play differently, after all.) Interestingly, these releases also puts into perspective that the past couple of years were quite busy for Atlus and the Nintendo 3DS, even if two of the games are expanded remakes.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Interview Series #2: toi8, Main Character Designer

The SMT X FE Developer Interview series continues with some words from main character designer toi8. Once again, Mystic of TRADUKOSOFT graciously translated the interview, which you can read here. I’ll summarize the interview below.

Due to the especially unique nature of this crossover and not having another reference point to help him find a way to articulate an aesthetic message to the game, toi8 admits being under quite some pressure to figure out how to do design characters when he first started. While the game is a crossover and a work of fiction, he still wanted something that could make the crossover make sense and feel consistent.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Staff Interview 1: Shinjiro Takada

Following the release of the first gameplay and cinematic footage of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem during the April 1st Nintendo Direct, Shinjiro Takada of Atlus took to the game’s official website to wrote down some of his thoughts as part of the first of a Staff Interview series for the game. Shinjiro Takada was also the director of the Devil Survivor series of games.

That interview has been translated and posted on this website. The translator, Mystic of TRADUKO SOFT, is not officially affiliated with Atlus or Nintendo in any way, but hopes to share the contents of the interview with non-Japanese speaking audiences. After the break I’ll offer a summary from the blog post’s translation, but if you’d like to learn more be sure to visit the blog directly and view the results of the translator’s effort!
