Yakuza Zero Trailer, Release Window and Remote Play Confirmed

A new trailer for Yakuza Zero debuted at this year’s Tokyo Game Show during the SCEJ 2014 Press Conference. The trailer focuses on giving insight into the brutality of Kazuma Kiryu’s early life working in the Tojo Clan. Against a bloodied client’s apologies and pleas for Kiryu to stop, Kiryu continues to rough him up.

Siliconera remarks that Nagoshi spoke a bit on the game after the trailer’s reveal. He talked again about the game’s setting during the late 80’s in Japan, “a period of time that was characterized by rapid acceleration of asset prices and overheated economic activity, with uncontrolled money supply and credit expansion.” This is a time that would eventually lead into the “Lost Decade”, which marked a cultural and economic shift in Japan.

In any case, Siliconera’s headline also confirms remote play between the Vita and PS4 – a feature present in Ishin that will again be present in Zero. Also, Gematsu reports that Sega has announced a Spring 2015 release window for Yakuza Zero.

Check out the trailer below!

Yakuza Zero is a Prequel, Younger Kiryu and Majima are Protagonists

Famitsu is offering more details on the newly and officially announced Yakuza Zero. Keeping in line with the numbered titling, Zero will be a prequel to the first Yakuza game, starring a 20-year old Kazuma Kiryu and a 24-year old Goro Majima as playable characters. The game takes place in the late 80’s and will further expand the origins of these two characters, whose friendship/rivalry has endured throughout the franchise. Players will travel through the iconic Yakuza city of Kamurocho in Tokyo (pictured above) and Osaka’s Soutenbori, a city that reflects the Kansai region of Japan and is home to the Omi Alliance, a powerful yakuza group.

Hit the jump to check out character bios for Kiryu and Majima, and their new looks! I’ve also included a personal musing about why localizing this game would be particularly excellent for the franchise in the West, please read it!

New Yakuza Game Exclusive to PS3 and PS4, Sega Reveals Teaser Website

Sega has revealed a new teaser website for their upcoming Yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku) game. While it doesn’t have an official name yet it seems likely it’ll just be called Yakuza 6, seeing how Sega has confirmed that the game will be part of the main series. The website mentions that there will be an announcement on August 24th, so it’s safe to assume that’s when the game will be revealed to the public. The game is also confirmed to be exclusive to the PS3 and PS4.

PlayStation Now Beta Includes Some Sega and Atlus Games, But No Valkyria Chronicles/Yakuza

The open beta for PlayStation Now, Sony’s new game streaming service, is now officially underway in the US and includes some Sega and Atlus games. Sega have three games available at the moment namely Sonic CD, Crazy Taxi and Alpha Protocol, while Atlus is offering people access to Catherine, their PS3 puzzle/adventure/horror game which they first released back in 2011. At one point Sega’s NiGHTS into Dreams was also available for the service, but right now it’s not part of the 100+ games available for the beta. Unfortunately that means Valkyria Chroncicles and the Yakuza games are also not available at the moment, something we hope will change in the future. It’s interesting to note that Alpha Protocol, unlike the other two games, is in fact not available as a digital download on PSN on the PS3. This means we may very well see Valkyria Chronicles and the Yakuza games become available on PlayStation Now as well, seeing how those aren’t available digitally either.

Fans Start “Day of the Dragon” Campaign to Convince Sega to bring Yakuza Games to the West

Over at the official Yakuza games forum, user king_ruckus is asking support for a “Day of the Dragon” initiative. The idea is to send letters to Sega (arriving around the 8th of August) asking them to localize the Yakuza games. Of course, we at Segalization are happy to spread the word! Here’s king_ruckus’s message to Yakuza fans:

It’s 2014 and Ryu Ga Gotoku 5(Yakuza 5) still hasn’t made its way outside of Japan. Help us reach out to SEGA in a meaningful way and show them that we still want this series.

Description:

Our goal is send at least 1,000 unique letters to SEGA’s main office in America on or around the “Day of the Dragon”, 8/8/2014.

Taking part in this campaign is EASY. Just have something ready to mail to the following address the week of 8/8/2014:

SEGA of America, Inc.
350 Rhode Island Street
Suite 400
San Francisco, CA 94103
USA

Your letter can be anything you want. Keep it simple or let loose, your choice. The important thing is to send something in to let SEGA know you still want more of this series!

This is an M-Rated, niche title. The Yakuza series really needs YOUR help to continue. Please take a few minutes out of your day and show some meaningful support.

If you’d also like to mail letters to the Japan or London offices, those addresses follow:

Japan:

SEGA Corporate
1-2-12 Haneda
Ohta-ku
Tokyo 144-8531
Japan

London:

SEGA Europe Ltd.
27 Great West Road
Brentford
Middlesex
TW8 9BW
United Kingdom

Be sure to like the Facebook page! Help spread the word on Twitter with #BringYakuzaWest and #DayOftheDragon! If you have a YouTube channel, make a video promoting this campaign! We can reach 1,000 fans easy if we work together to make it happen!

You can find their Facebook page here. User SonsOfOcelot has also made a Youtube video to promote the campaign.

Next Yakuza Title in Development

Gematsu reports that a recent Famitsu article reveals the development of the next Yakuza title to the public. Series director Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Masayoshi Yakayama spoke about the next game in an interview with the magazine. Details are scant as of this article’s writing, but apparently the interview mentions auditions for the game’s hostesses. Whether this title is a mainline entry or a spinoff, this next game could mark the Yakuza series’ departure from the PS3, even if major titles like Persona 5 are yet to be released. What sort of Yakuza game do you want to see, and where do you think it will end up?

It bears repeating that the Yakuza franchise is sorely absent in the West, with both Yakuza 5 and Yakuza: Ishin remaining unlocalized.

edit: As an aside, It should also be noted that Yakuza 5’s localization was foregone in favor of focusing internal resources on Yakuza: Ishin. Toshihiro Nagoshi has gone on record several times saying that the script for Yakuza 5 is significantly large in comparison to previous Yakuza titles. Ishin’s development was public knowledge a few months after the fifth title came out; if the localization was to be handled in-house and by select Yakuza team developers in Japan, there would be conflict. Some fans noted that localization rumors for the third game only began to circulate six months after that game was released in Japan, giving some merit to the idea of waiting out an announcement.  With more than a year since 5’s release in Japan, and with a possible sixth entry in development, if Sega does indeed prefer to handle localizations in-house the West risks falling further and further behind on Yakuza titles.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd E3 Stage Demo

Gamespot have published a new video showing a stage demo of Project Diva F 2nd, and Sega’s Aaron Webber was there to tell people more about the game. And if you had any doubt that he really wants you to play this game, just watch the video. Aaron talked to the viewers directly, and asked people that only ever play the more well-known FPS games to broaden their horizons a bit and give games like Project Diva F 2nd a chance. Of course, that’s a message that we at Segalization can get behind!

Sega of Japan: “no plans at this time” for Western Yakuza: Ishin Release

GamingBolt recently published an interview they conducted with Sega of Japan on Yakuza: Ishin. They asked a variety of questions, inquiring about development of the game, comparison between PS3 and PS4 versions and how Sega worked on both at the same time, and the decision to make a new spinoff title instead of the next mainline entry.

Incidentally, the Sega spokesperson fielding the questions made some interesting remarks: notably about incorporating the PS Vita into the game (and how it affected game balance), and the lack of plans for an Xbox One release. While not necessarily a major talking point, the viability of expanding Yakuza to other platforms besides Sony consoles has occasionally been brought up in fan discussions.

Sadly, the most notable takeaway from this interview is that Sega of Japan has officially stated that they currently have no plans to localize Yakuza:Ishin. What this says about perhaps having Sony intervene isn’t clear at all. But in any case, Sega’s absence of current plans to do so, coupled with the continued absence of Yakuza 5 outside of Japan is quite dire for non-Japanese fans of the series and for the franchise’s health in regions outside of Japan.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2007) Preview and Discussion

I recently had the chance to check out Yakuza: Like a Dragon, a live-action movie adaptation of the first Yakuza game directed by Takeshi Miike. It should be noted that this film is apparently quite liberal in its retelling of the first game: though a decision not necessarily problematic in itself it merits noting perhaps for some fans. After doing so, I’d like to talk a bit about my experience with the movie and perhaps use it as a springboard for discussion.

I would also like to note that the extent of my direct exposure to the first Yakuza game lie with the summary of that game’s plot in Yakuza 3. Hit the break to read more! Be warned that while I do try to avoid spoiling the movie too heavily, I do refer to some spoilers in a general or vague way. Discussing spoilers openly in the comments section or on our forums is totally fine, however.
